Keloid Treatment

Keloid Treatment
At Hawaii Dermatology & Surgery, we offer specialized care for keloids—thick, raised scars that form after skin injury or surgery. Keloids can cause both cosmetic concerns and discomfort, but with our advanced treatments, we can help reduce their size, appearance and prevent further growth. Our dermatologist use the latest techniques to manage and treat keloids effectively, restoring your skin’s natural texture and appearance.

What Are Keloids?
Keloids are raised, thick scars that form when the body produces excess collagen during the healing process. Unlike normal scars, which fade over time, keloids can continue to grow and extend beyond the original injury site. They may appear pink, red, or darker than the surrounding skin and can be itchy, painful, or restrictive, especially if they form in areas where skin moves or stretches. While they are non-cancerous, keloids can be both a cosmetic concern and a source of discomfort.
How Keloids Develop
Keloid treatment begins with a thorough evaluation by our dermatologist to assess the size, location, and condition of the keloid. Depending on the severity and your individual needs, treatments may include:
- Steroid Injections – To reduce inflammation and flatten the keloid.
- Cryotherapy – Freezing the keloid to shrink its size.
- Laser Therapy – Targeting the keloid to improve its appearance and texture.
- Surgical Removal – For larger keloids, excision may be an option, often followed by additional treatments to prevent recurrence.
- Silicone Gel Sheets or Pressure Therapy – Non-invasive options to help prevent further keloid formation after removal
- Monitoring – if there are no symptoms, then a keloid can be monitored over time and be treated if it becomes symptomatic.
- We work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that best suits your needs.

FAQ
FAQs
Answers to your frequently asked questions.
What causes keloids to form?
Keloids form when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process, often after an injury, surgery, or skin condition like acne.
Can keloids be removed completely?
While complete removal is possible, keloids have a high recurrence rate. Additional treatments, like steroids or lasers, can help prevent regrowth.
How long does it take to see results?
Results vary depending on the treatment used, but you may notice improvement within a few weeks to months.
Will my keloid come back after treatment?
There is a chance of recurrence, especially with larger keloids. Follow-up care is important for preventing regrowth, and additional treatments may be necessary.
